After his death, Scinto's family discovered a list of ManKind members that included prominent local politicians and academics.
Griesser said the lawsuit brought by Scinto parents was settled "with no admission of wrongdoing" by the organization. The family received $75,000, according to Griesser and Scinto's mother Kathy.
"I personally have a lot of sadness that Michael Scinto died the way he did," Griesser said. "It's a tragedy. I don't see his participation [in the seminar] as being contributory in any way."
The men who attend ManKind Project retreats include lawyers, physicians, businessmen and people who have completed alcohol and drug abuse programs, Griesser said. There are two similar groups for women that are not affiliated to the ManKind Project.
Griesser admitted that negative publicity had tarnished the image of the ManKind Project, which was created in 1985 as a male answer to the women's movement. Through responses on the group's website, Griesser is trying to combat the perception of some that the group is a cult.

Authorities have not named the 34-year-old suspect, but they describe him as a resident of Billingsley, Alabama, and an employee at one of the firms -- Ferguson Enterprises.

A 30-year hospitality industry veteran, Gary C. The GBTA Foundation, the research and education arm of the Alexandria, Va.-based Global Business Travel Association, released its annual list on Monday. The cities were ranked by both their overall travel tax burden and by the discriminatory taxes.

Every interterm, alongside more typical courses, Chapman offers a bevy of travel courses, sending students to join professors around the world as they further their research, learn about other cultures and enrich themselves in ways sitting in a classroom never could.
For example, rather than listening to a lecture on A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens timeless novel set in London and Paris during the French Revolution, interterm students visit those cities to see the markings of the tale with their own eyes.
These travel courses can be focused on just about anything, including business, cooking, science, culture even all at once. Penny Bryan, a Gary Sherwin professor of scholarly practice at Chapman, recently returned from a interterm travel course to Florence, Italy, with 13 students.
During their three-week stay, these students lived the lives of true Florentines, immersing themselves in the culture as much as possible. This wasnt a case of seeing a landmark and hurrying to the next one students stayed in apartments, went to supermarkets, took their clothes to the cleaners, shopped around, explored and lived as members of the community.
Bryan says that as a huge portion of the worlds artistic treasures are in Italy and with a good chunk of those in Florence, students can learn more about aesthetics and culture by living their daily lives as Florentines than they ever could in a lecture hall back home.
There is art everywhere. If were thinking about aesthetics and culture, its in the stones on the street, its the architecture of the building, its the way people display their goods in the grocery store, Bryan said.
On an average morning, after meeting in a palazzo classroom, students would debrief on the previous day, talk about the coming days activities and then set out to see the city.
Every day took students to a different museum, church or other artistic site.
Peppered throughout the trip were an assortment of workshops giving students a chance to go hands-on with true Italian masters to practice the arts of pottery, cooking and more.
Bryan mentioned that many students went through an evolution during their travels cautiously exploring the city in groups but later boldly venturing out on their own. A big part of this transformation for Sammet was being brought out of her comfort zone and being exposed to one-of-a-kind experiences something these travel courses excel at.
Bryan has led these classes for five years. Motivated in part by the chance to see students transform in the way Sammet did, shes not stopping any time soon.
Were walking on cobblestones that Michelangelo walked on seeing things, six, seven or eight hundred years old, Bryan said. We eat in a room that was established in 1100. Its a very different sense of history that goes along with it. Theres no way you can get that sitting in a classroom in Orange there just isnt. You have to go out and be willing to open yourself to that kind of experience.

Alan Greenspan: US real estate is stagnating
It's Alan Greenspan's top concern right now. The former chairman of the Federal Reserve says real https://plus.google.com/104449493616854633442/about estate in the U.S. is stagnating.
Sure, some cities are seeing buildings (and prices) rising, but construction of both homes and commercial properties overall isn't back to where it was before the Great Recession.
"We haven't come out of the bottom," Greenspan told CNNMoney's Cristina Alesci. "We are in the position now of secular stagnation."
Secular stagnation has become a buzz word for little to no growth.
Greenspan says that before the recession, about 8% of America's economy was from construction of houses and buildings that were expected to last for 20-plus years. Now that sector makes https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXSIUivivJEx8SX1IPg6twQ up only 4% of U.S. GDP (gross domestic product, the standard measure of economic growth).
While Greenspan acknowledges the most recent housing data is showing a little bit of pick up, he says, "Single family housing is still only one-third of where they [sic] were in 2006 and earlier."

The problem: The reason this is so alarming to Greenspan is that prior to the Great Recession, America experienced 10 recessions and recoveries since World War II. In each of those 10 recoveries, construction -- both residential and non-residential -- was a big driver of the rebound.
His sentiments have been echoed by other leading real estate experts.
Karl "Chip" Case, the co-creater of the Case-Shiller Home Price Index, told CNNMoney last year that after 50 years of pretty solid gains, the housing market is a "crapshoot" now.
"You've got much more negative vibrations in the housing surveys about homeownership than we ever had before," Case said.

Hangover from the recession: Of course, almost exactly a decade ago Greenspan famously warned Congress of "froth" in the housing market.
On June 9, 2005, Greenspan told the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, "Although a bubble in home prices for the nation as a whole does not appear likely, there does appear to be, at a minimum, signs of froth in some local markets, where home prices seem to have risen to unsustainable levels."
That "froth" turned out to be the build up to a major crisis. Too many people bought homes they could not really afford.
The question now is whether there is truly a "new normal" for American real estate or whether the nation will -- and should -- return to the levels before the recession.

The best investments for generating retirement income
(MoneyWatch) Suppose you've done a good job investing and accumulating money in your IRA and 401(k) plan, and now you're trying to decide how to best invest those assets to generate retirement income. Which investments might work best for you at this stage of the game?
While the answer isn't the same for everyone, the decisions you have to make regarding asset allocation for those investments are. Each of us needs to determine the appropriate mix of investments (such as stocks, bonds, annuities and real estate) for our own situation, and we also need to choose specific investment products and services.
Welcome to Week 10 of my series "16 Weeks to Plan Your Retirement." It's time to discuss the considerations you'll need to take into account when choosing investment vehicles for your retirement savings. You'll also need to decide which of the retirement income generators (RIGs) I discussed in my previous post you'll want to use to generate retirement income. If you haven't read that post yet, you may want to review it first to more easily understand this post. Ready? Then let's get started.
RIG No. 1: Invest your retirement savings, and use just the interest and dividends to generate retirement income.
For this purpose, I like using low-cost, no-load, broad-based mutual funds balanced between stocks and bonds. When you're searching, look for a fund that adopts the strategies advocated by CBS MoneyWatch bloggers Allan Roth and Larry Swedroe: Keep the fees low (under 50 basis points and the lower, the better), and periodically rebalance the asset allocation between stocks and bonds to stay within prescribed targets, which enforces discipline to buy low and sell high.
Consider funds that invest at least one-third but no more than two-thirds in stocks, with the remainder invested in bonds. This type of allocation gives you the potential for growth to keep up with inflation, with protection against stock market declines. In today's market, these types of investments will generate investment earnings of about 2 percent to 3 percent per year, depending on the specific asset allocation you've selected, with potential for future growth in both principal and dividend amounts. A few good funds that invest along these lines are the Vanguard Wellesley Fund (VWIAX), the Vanguard Balanced Fund (VBIAX), and the Vanguard Wellington Fund (VWELX).
Target date funds that have reached their target retirement year may also fit the above goals. And a reasonable alternative for some of your investments might be mutual fund REITs (real estate investment trusts), since this type of investment can also give you income with the potential for growth.
If you'd followed such a strategy for the first 12 years of this century, which included two stock market crashes, you would have ended with more money than you started with, and you would have enjoyed a steady flow of investment earnings that had only mild fluctuations. You would have survived one of the worst periods for investing!
If you want to live on your investment earnings, I'd avoid using CDs or cash equivalents -- interest rates are just too low right now to offer much income. And even if interest rates rise in the future, I'd be very concerned about a future repeat of the past few years.
On the other hand, I wouldn't seek the highest-yielding stocks or bonds either, as these assets often have underlying risks and the high yields can evaporate.
You can use Morningstar to help you evaluate and shop for the types of mutual funds mentioned here.
The advantage of this investing strategy combined with this RIG is that you keep your principal intact, and you don't need to sell investments to generate retirement income. You don't need to panic and sell when the market drops. The disadvantage is that this method usually generates the lowest amount of retirement income.
RIG No. 2: Use systematic withdrawals in which you invest your retirement savings and withdraw principal cautiously.
If this is the method you've decided to select for generating retirement income, then the same kinds of investments I mentioned above work well here, too -- with a caveat. Here's one scenario you want to avoid: exhausting your savings because you invested well above 50 percent of your assets in stocks, withdrew too aggressively (well over 4 percent of your account balances), and experienced a stock market decline in the first 10 years of your retirement.
To protect against this possibility, either invest conservatively (with under 50 percent of your assets in stocks) or withdraw conservatively (take out just 3.5 percent or less of your savings each year or both. Frankly, I'd rather see you hold back on withdrawals in your early years of retirement and only increase your withdrawals if you experience positive returns for 10 years or more to make sure you don't outlive your money. T. Rowe Price has a good online calculator to help estimate failure rates of different combinations of asset allocations and withdrawal rates. You should use it to help you figure out an asset allocation and withdrawal plan that works best for you.
Be sure not to overlook your 401(k) plan at work for investments that can generate income in retirement. It's possible your plan offers funds similar to the ones I've described in this post with lower fees than you can get as a retail customer with a financial institution.
